What is OTC Drug Addiction?
Commonly abused over-the-counter medications include dextromethorphan (DXM) and promethazine. Both can be found in cough syrups and/or capsules, such as Promethazine DM, Guaifenesin DM, Mucinex DM, Nuedexta, Bromfed DM, Robitussin Cough + Chest Congestion DM, Delsym, Tussin DM, Vicks Nyquil D Cold and Flu. Although some of these substances are regulated by pharmacies, most are easily available and teens may turn to them first for this reason.
The use of dextromethorphan causes short-term effects such as euphoria; increased heart rate, blood pressure, temperature; numbness; dizziness; nausea; vomiting; confusion; paranoia; altered visual perceptions; problems with movement; buildup of excess acid in body fluids.
